Post-it Book Number Four

For a variety of boring technical reasons I’m not developmentally-inclined-enough to address, my monthly roundups of daily post-it notes stopped functioning on this blog. It was around about the time I filled up my last sketchbook, but that definitely didn’t mean these daily drawings stopped! In fact, it was quite the opposite- as I noted in the aforelinked post, I’m filling up books faster than ever.

So – book number four is full, and works as kind of a diary of my life from March 2017 to October 2018. I never even realised it was possible to generate so many puns and terrible ideas!

This all inevitably means it’s time to start a new book. Number five, here we come:

Another Post-it sketchbook is filled

Since I started making an effort to publish a new Post-it note every day, these books have been filling up a lot faster! I filled up my latest sketchbook in February, and it covers the time from Summer 2015 to now. It’s like watching my life flash before my eyes!

Lost Property

I received a package from Russia this week, which isn’t something that happens very often in Ricky Trickartt HQ. Inside were finished copies of some artwork I had created for St. Petersburg’s Microfunk – more cardboard cassettes, but in a totally different vein to last time!

Lost Dubs on Microfunk

The album is a collection of tracks from various members and friends of the Microfunk collective that were lost or unreleased over the years. The concept was about finding new life in something that had been left behind. I was commissioned by Bop to illustrate this concept with the bouquet from the bowl, and got to have plenty of fun filing the inside with pipes too!

I love print so much. The art looks great on the heavy brown paper stock and white ink – it almost looks like I drew each copy myself with some super-fine white Posca markers.

Thanks to Bop and everyone at Microfunk for the project. You can get a copy on their Bandcamp page.

Canary Nonsense

Oh dear, what happened this January?

Well, David Bowie died, which I am quite sad about, and still in a little bit of denial over. I’m sure he’ll be back in one form or another at some unknown future. We had a bit of snow, though not as much as New York did, and I also pondered my digger-operating fantasies.

I drew a lot of utter nonsense this month. I like drawing nonsense at the best of times, but I particularly enjoyed this month how you guys who follow me seemed to like it too, even occasionally reading more meanings into these things than I had ever cooked up myself!

Here’s the latest twenty-eight for your fascinations:

The Little Yellow Journal of Another Trip To America

Another winter has been spent being bewildered in the States! This year I encountered (beside all the usual bigotry, gun worship and emotionally manipulative advertising) the fattest chihuahua I had ever seen, mailboxes that looked like they were alive, and a different take on the self-service vending machine. I ate an obscene amount of tacos too, for all meals of the day. You can’t do that in Britain!

And then I flew home, and wondered what just happened. Here’s how it looked through my eyes:

The Yellow Zoo

Well hey Internet, check out what I’ve been thinking about for the past month! I think I think about animals a lot by the looks of all these drawings.

The two biggest hits came late this month – the PowerPoint Slide and the In-stag-ram were exciting! My personal favourite though was the Launderette, it told a nice little story in one little square.

New Portfolio Page: Rough Rhythms

Wax Prints at a market in Rwanda

Something that really captured my imagination while travelling around Africa last summer was the dutch/wax print fabrics that were popular in Rwanda. As is plainly obvious, I’m a total sucker for bright colours, but what I also loved was the sheer madness of the designs themselves.

Like the woman casually walking down the street with the weight of a small Vespa in potatoes balanced on her head, wearing a dress adorned with chevrons and plaice fish. Or this cheerful lady wearing a skirt emblazoned with itnernational currency symbols:

No Sterling

It really made me wonder how they settle on the random objects to turn into these wonderful patterns. I love a good pattern, and I love drawing strange things, so I’ve gathered up some of the irregular patterns I’ve been drawing into this new page on my portfolio.

I’ve put a set of ten up in the portfolio – look at them here! It’d be amazing to see a pattern I drew turned into fabric one day. I would be so honoured!

February’s Fancies

This month in Ricky Trickartt’s wonderful world of colour, I’ve been pondering the backstory to Cecil’s Ride though a series of cat drawings. These are probably some of my favourite doodles over the past few weeks! Not all of the cats are to do with him though – the sack of cats came from Don Quixote, which I finished reading this month.

A couple of weeks ago two stories hit the internet at the same time- the resurrection of Skymall and release of footage from the new James Bond movie. The combination left me remembering Adele’s theme song to the last movie, and I imagined what James Bond would look like (and be thinking) if he ever got the opportunity to peruse a copy of Skymall on a long-distance flight.

I also found myself musing on the possibilities of throwing a hot dog so it would fly the length of a swimming pool. Maybe a 25-metre pool as that’s what was have here in the valley. I think my best bet would be some kind of balsa-and-tissuepaper wing construction. It’d make a great competition, but I don’t know if I’ll ever put this daydream into action, particularly if the hot dog is topped with mustard. That would just make a mess.

Drawing is fun!
