I’m not entirely sure why I let myself leave updating my blog until I have loads of stuff to put up in one go, because it just makes my blog take longer to load, instead of spreading all thew pictures and text over more entries. I guess it makes me feel less like I’ve just set up a wordpress blog I’m using as my portfolio (as seems to be popular for lazy designers!)and more like I’m doing a proper job of my website?

Anyway! After an admittedly quiet spell in late autumn (the weather may as well still be late autumn too, despite only being a week from christmas now… Good old Blighty, keeping weather worth making smalltalk about), I have plenty of stuff to show here.

I put a couple of new wallpapers up last week for your aesthetic pleasure. The winter sun was designed to cheer Lilly up, but proved popular with friends too, so I decided it was only fair i shared it with the world. The second one was actually a pitch for the cover of the forthcoming Future Sound of Tokyo album on Hospital that we all decided against, but still made a nice wallpaper. It was deeply inspired by Tokidoki, so sorry Tokidoki- it’s cos I love you!

Speaking of Hospital, here is a project I’ve been working on for them of late- Herbal Flyers. A few months back, Chris decided to change the format to the Square and has left me in charge of the design of the fronts, as long as I maintain the H logo at the same size on it.

herbal

It’s turned out to be a really fun project as I’m being given a lot of creative freedom with the designs, involving all sorts of crazy junk like fairy lights, underfloor insulation and thinking up cheesey january sales tags… The flyers here are for November, December, New Year’s Eve and January.

If you’re in London in January, I reccomend you come down to Herbal (182-184 Kingsland Road, E2 :P) on Friday the 19th, to see my good self pushing some records together for the early set, anlongside friends such as S.P.Y, London Elektricity and Cyantific in the main room and The Goose, Zac Vibert and Riley bringing the upstairs freestyle funk. You don’t have much of an excuse as it’s FREE ENTRY all night as a happy new year gift from us at Hospital!

Been getting involved with Knowledge Magazine this winter. Here is an advert / poster for BarKnowledge in Chamonix i knocked up for them, complete with a tiny marmot, who is wearing headphones and a very Isadora Duncan -esque flowy scarf.

barknowledge

Knowledge also kindly offered to run an editorial article on myself in their regular art section too, so you can check that out in the issue with Mistical on the cover (not the Ed Rush + Optical cover tho! After some editorial errors in that issue they graciously offered to reprint the article correctly, so we’ll pretend that issue never existed in Casa del Trickartt…) for a nice little article about me and some pictures of my work!

knowledgespread

Speaking of Mistical (are you getting tired of the links between everything I’m writing about yet? No more now, I promise!), I managed to get in contact with the boys at Soul:R and pitched some ideas for their album at them, which I can now announce is going ahead! Here is the cover- very minimal, like their style, and a clever play on the title. It’s worth noting this will look considerably different in print, so expect some photos of it put online when it is printed.

11h

Here’s an odd little project I undertook lately. I did the coding aspect of the design of Lifted Music’s forum last month. You are probably thinking ‘that doesn’t look very Trickartt!’, and if you are, you’d be right, cos the artwork isn’t my work. it’s done by a chap called Carlos from NitroCorp, who is a talented fella and did a lovely job of getting the artwork appropriate for the label. Again, this is one of those projects that doesn’t really deserve a place in my portfolio, especially as it’s not my artwork, but the design is still my work so it’s worth showing here.

Last thing to show for tonight. In a bid to get more people wearing my designs, I’ve decided to start painting more tshirts for people beside myself. here is one i did this week for my friend Budgie, hence Trill, the popular Budgerigar feed. simple and silly, but a cool design nonetheless.

trill

That’s enough for now. My next update will prolly be after christmas, showcasing some of the gifts I have made for other people… I don’t want to put these things online before they’ve recieved them tho!

Recent Movements

I’m sure i have a lot more stuff to write about on my weblog today than i can think of, so i guess if i remember what else needs adding, i’ll add it over the next few days.

Self Portrait

I’ve really got into the habit of drawing on post-it notes recently. at least it’s drawing on something, i guess. i’ve been coming up with some funny little doodles tho!

postitportrait

here is my favourite of late: a self-portrait on a post-it note! according to my dear brother, it’s funny cos it’s a great likeness of me. hah.

City Life

This is the follow-up ep to logistics’ album i worked on this summer. nice and simple, but pretty effective.

Happy Birthday Alyssa!

I painted alyssa a hoodie for her birthday, with lots of silly clouds dotted around it- here she is trying it on on her birthday. i came up with the idea on a bit of a whim but i’m really rather happy with it now! there are better photos of it Here. 🙂

alyssainhood

that’s about all i can think of at the moment. i’m sure there’s plenty more to come tho!

Avast Ye!

ello. just a quick note to say welcome to the all-new Trickartt. this is version 3.0- the third major version of the site in 3 years.

i fell in love with php inserts (my first php script! haha) and they’re the basis of my entire website. the new site has been completely redesigned to be a lot more corporate, full of less junk, and the focus taken away from my random writings here. it’s also considerably easier to update now too!

now it’s all online i’m starting to worry it’s tooo corporate and not artistic enough, but whatever way i look at it, it’s better than it was. maybe i’ll get the hire me! and artistic blend right whenever i feel the urge to start work on v4.

i just want to mention a quick thankyou to tom at hospital for helping write my about text! it’s so much more fun than the excuse for an about section i had before, not to mention more accurate! hehe.

anyway, i hope you enjoy looking at the pictures and reading all the junk i write about here more than ever. hehe.

Hospital Art! and other fruity things

The Hospital Art! exhibition at the ArtVinyl gallery in E8 came to a close this week, before i even posted about it here in my weblog. ironically i did make a post about it on my new site about a month ago, but the site has been sitting around at about 99% finished for so long the exhibition came and went.

here is a blurry photo of everyone mingling at opening night:

and here is a photo of most of the work up on display:

Happy Birthday Lilly!

It was Lilly’s birthday this week, so i painted her a new hoodie:

finite

bit of an adventure behind this, but i won’t go into full rambling detail. the inside is custom-lined using fabric from a pink babyblanket, which is really soft! and the entire thing is hand-painted in shimmering pink. i wasn’t sure i was happy with it until Lilly said she loves it! 🙂

Some new stuff that doesn’t really belong on my portfolio

hi! i was thinking about why i decided to keep my weblog and i realised it’s a good ground to post weird stuff that doesn’t really belong on my portfolio, especially as it’s not all corp-ed up. here is a drawing i did a couple of days ago that’s a perfect example of why.

vessel400

i’m not really sure what there is to this beyond what you see, but he’s rather creepy looking. he’s eager. i don’t know what he is, but he’s on some kind of seafaring vessel and is wearing a ruff. how elizabethan!

grassbear

and the following day i drew this fella. it started off as a dancing bear, then i decided i’d put him (yes him) in a grass skirt so he was more dancing a bit of a hawiian hula thing. again, doesn’t really have a place on the portfolio, but there’s something interesting about it nonetheless.

i leave you with this penguin!

Florp

all these entries! yesterday, i made this:

Click it. it’s a bit nauseating, but really somewhat fascinating!

More Boobies!

Kali pointed out to me the amazingness of boobies! check their feet!

bfb

this almost proves that not only are they graced with amazing names, but they are amazing creatures full stop! possibly the greatest airbourne creatures at least!

Booby Chicks!

2 days in a row? what’s going on?

Pelican

pelican-about-town

I decided i was going to draw a pelican, with all it’s pouchy glory. so here it is, pelican about town. when setting out to draw it, however, i got distracted and ended up drawing this first:

Booby Chick!

booby-chick

this isn’t me being crude, that’s you! look! Wikipedia doesn’t lie! hehee! anyway. i thought that blue tits were funny, but i think “booby chick”s really take the biscuit.

Neglect

Here’s some stuff i neglected to update last week.

Wallpapers

I Added 4 new wallpapers for you to download! although some of them really aren’t that new at all. but the crazy oddlips comic look was just done this evening! so fresh i’ll prolly hate it in the morning. haha.

Shortfolio / Threads Portfolio

tinyshortfolio

I made a Shortfolio and a Threads Portfolio this week. The idea is to be a shorter and more powerful portfolio, and something to show people that may be interested in working with me or in the fashion industry. or something.

Wild Wacom

flacom

This was something i forgot to add in my last post… I decorated my Wacom pen tablet, made it all outlandish, floral and ladle-y. hooray!

Quarter

Yes, it’s been shamefully long since i last updated this. i have tonnes of new stuff to show, to the point i’ve probably completely forgotten about some stuff! hah. 🙂 so let’s get on with it!

John B – Electrostep

This is John B’s 5th Artist Album. it may as well be 80s pop at 174bpm, which if you ask me is fantastic! great fun! hooray john! etc!

Med School

Med School is a new sub-label of the mighty Hospital Records. i spent ages dancing around ideas being so close to what I considered perfection but not quite, then I had some of what I called ‘colsperation’. Talking to Tony and seeing how enthusiastic he was about the project just fuelled me, and now it’s done and i’ve smashed it!

The project has consisted of logo and identity design, sleeve and labels, publicity, (minor) web design, and typography. I completely designed and created the two weights of the Med School font from scratch due to a dissatisfaction with the rounded typefaces available. again, very happy!

Critical Site

Speaking of webdesign, i actually did some for someone else. here is a little preview of the website I have built for Kasra’s Critical Music imprint. It hasn’t gone live yet tho, so this is only a little sneak at it…

[]

And I’m not stopping there! believe it or not, I’m doing more web design. A complete overhaul of Hospital Records’ website is in the pipelines too!

Logistics – Now More Than Ever

Here’s another big project I’ve been working on! This is Logistics’ debut album ‘Now More Than Ever’, which is probably the most anticipated and (hopefully going to be the) biggest drum & bass album of the year!

The project was really quite something! It started by Chris showing me his idea, then I got carried away with working on it! I came up with this wild outlandish idea to do the typography in lights, and ended up making it! Amongst usual design work – I singlehandedly commanded the leadup single “Beatbox Master”, and did the typographic work on the album, but the real feat of the project here is the 750-LED sign. I designed and engineered the sign from scratch, and soldered all 750 bulbs together (several times over in some places) and then wired it together. Many thanks to my grandpa for his sterling engineering advice througout the course of the project!
nmte-dev1nmte-dev2nmte-dev3

We then brought Boris Austin (BoxedLab.com) to photograph the man himself Logistics and the sign. There were a few minor hiccups with the photos, but we got there in the end and I think Boris has done an absolutely magnificent job of the photos!

Above: Album Cover. Also big ups to my brother Adam for loaning us the shades we used on the album cover. safety! Below: Leadup Single Cover

The leadup single is in Black and Silver (all spacey looking). It is being released on 12″ Single and 7″ in an inverted colourway, with an alternative B-Side. Buy Both! hehee. Oh and of course, the album is fantastic. 2 CDs of Magnificence! well done Loggy!

DOA002

After the seminal Floodlight by DJ Fresh launching the DOA label astronomically, there has been a rather long hiatus. but they’ve finally lined up the next single, and i was brought in to do the art.

It’s not very Trickartt! the music is very dark and techy, so i went for that look! hopefully it’ll look good in print and the people that like that sort of music will like my art! hehe.

doa002

Trickartt Threads

Just to tease you! here are my latest hand-painted designs. i promise i’ll start selling some if you can prove to me you’ll buy them! hehe.
skirtee

this was a bit of a weird idea that was kind of successful but kind of not. i like it, but after wearing it a couple times, thought it was a bit of a weird thing to have painted on my back (yet i’m happy to wear tshirts with space lizards and men in hippo suits? haha)

bambootee

now this design i am happier with. it’s maybe a little femenine, but i think it would look fantastic professionally printed! it’s my first not-completely-stupid design, and one of my first with minimal colours. i went for the lime green to match the laces in my new EMILIO PUCCI ADIDAS! hehee. i was so glad i got them!

Other Stuff!

We got some pinbadges made of the pixelly quiff i designed, to promote the computer love ep and renaissance man lp (both of which are out in the shops now, and i reccommend if you like your drum and bass bouncy and stupid!)
quiffpins

here is a thuggin’ bundt cake! threatening confectionary!
thugbundt

to further my range of carpentry products, I designed and built Adam a new bed for his birthday! i spent ages beavering away on it hidden in my grandparents’ garage working on it where he would never see it, but he still rumbled me, the swine. oh well, at least the end product is good! here it is modelled by his daughter, looking rather cheeky!
adbed

also on the carpentry tip, i finally finished and painted my record&bookshelves to match the decsk! very pleased with them both now! hooray! 🙂
relves

lastly, as you may have spotted in the above pic, i made a lamp! it matches the skirt I made for Lilly earlier in the year, and i’m really pleased with it! i think it ends the cupcake range from trickartt from the time being. i don’t want to potentially upset johnny cupcakes. haha. the workings are salvaged from a broken ikea lamp i managed to fix, the base is sculpted out of fimo, and the shade is hand-painted!
cupcakelamp

ok that’s enough from me. hopefully the next time i update this it will be sooner than 3 months away!
