I don't think my shoulders are really this broad, it's just how the drawing came out, and I liked the lines, so I am dealing with it :)

6160587856A Tomato Plant with Legs110814 - A Tomato Plant with LegsThe fourteenth was Lilly's Mom's birthday, so I made her this card. When I was trying to decide what to make a card of, Lilly reminded me that she has been growing tomatoes recently, so a tomato plant was an idea that could have legs.

This manifested itself as a tomato plant with legs, ergo what we have here.

6050625602Slice110813 - SliceMy friend bought a yellow bicicle frame made by a company called FELT and an iPad, so naturally I took this as a cue to make an iPad case out of yellow felt.

The case is OK for a prototype - it turns out felt is a pretty terrible material for the job as it stretches so easily. I managed to add a rip cord to the case which slides the iPad out though. Cool!

Amazing

6158445750It's A Good Frisbee110727 - It's A Good FrisbeeToday at the Hospital office, we discussed the possibility that people might not be aware that our hospital frisbees are actually good, instead assuming that they are cheap promotional giveaway crap (they are good). Chris Goss's desk is still littered with samples of unsatisfactory frisbees that didn't meet the mark.

I can personally attest to the frisbee's quality because when the weather brightened up on Sunday, Lilly and I took one to a nearby green and threw it around for the afternoon. Lilly got stung by nettles when retrieving it from a bush and I got a rather surprising bruise on my thumb from being rubbish at catching it, but both of these are result of user error and aren't the fault of the frisbee.

So to attest to that, here is an infographic to explain why they're good!

6153326622Shopper110701 - Shopperbuy.trickartt.com

So in case you were wondering (I'm sure you weren't) where my daily creativities have been for the past week or so, this is the explanation... I have made myself a shop!

It took me wayy longer to make than I expected: Depending on how I choose to look at it, it either took two weeks, three months or four years to do! Regardless, it was a hell of a lot of work that not only took up all of my personal-project-time (hence the lack of dailies*), but even hugely ate into my real-work-time, way more than I would have liked.

Regardless, it is finished now! I am selling the linocut and letterpressed cards I have been working on for the past three months, and have put the big prints I did four years ago up on the shop too. Ridiculously, I am not selling the two things I get the most enquiries about at the moment - my plush creations and t-shirts. We'll see how the shop goes before I try to further expand my range.

* I have backdated a few now so there is only a week missing. Eeeeee!

6152780859Birdliner110614 - BirdlinerThis little bird hangs around by the towpath a lot. I like how he appears to have orange eyeliner around his eyes to match his beak. very stylish.

I drew this picture using Adobe Illustrator 8 on this PowerBook G4. I totally miss hatch effects in Illustrator - I never understood why they killed it! It was a simpler time back then - I don't think it'd be even remotely possible to run Illustrator CS5 (version 15!) withonly 128mb RAM, but the ridiculous thing is I don't understand why. Give or take a few tiny, incremental features, the software still doesexactly the same stuff in exactly the same way. For the main function of the programme, the difference between v8 and v15 is neglegable at best.

It's also worth noting that I barely managed to post this to Flickr from OS9 too! I had to email it to flickr but it worked!

Curiously, for today's daily creativity, it wasn't the accompanying text that was washed away, but the actual creativity. I can't for the life of me find the finished version anywhere, so you'll have to accept this grubby scan of an earlier version of it. Sorry!

6153324402A drawing of how my arms feel after this weekend110612 - A drawing of how my arms feel after this weekendOn Friday, I ended up going a little overboard with some yard work, trimming hedges and generally weeding the car park. On Saturday, I chopped up and sorted a load of wood for a bonfire at my grandparents' house, and across the whole weekend, I finished letterpressing my first range of cards. All of this has left my forearms feeling vaguely jelly-ish and a lot like they look in this drawing.

6153323940Macassette110609 - MacassetteI had this idea this evening - it's on my old, barely-working PowerBook G4. I would never deface a working laptop in this way. Fun!

Quasi-related: Our Boris Netsky is a Serato DJ so he has put Hospital stickers all over the lid of his MacBook. I understand his intention but if you want to give your notebook a bit of identity, there are much more interesting ways of doing so; I secretly wish he'd ask me do a more bespoke customisation of his, perhaps along this line, or just let me adapt the apple in the centre so it glows like a Hospital H logo instead of the Apple

6152744289Sloth Brand110601 - Sloth Brand16 September 2011: Originally, This was my daily creativity for June 1st, but I really didn't like it. The sentiment was great, but the picture was a massive disappointment, which i noted at the time.

Following the Great SCED Washout, I had to dig out everything to restore it, and I found I did this after I published the original picture. I was going to brand my ink operation as sloth brand, as the ink moved so slowly.

I thought better of branding the ink though, as I think my points of reference would be a bit abstract for my buyers, who probably knew very little about my world. This is, however, a much much better piece of design/art than my original creativity was though, so I am going to use the washout as an opportunity to replace it in the SCED canon!

6152744073C-M-Y-Yay!110531 - C-M-Y-Yay!I collected 10kg of ink today - 2.5kg each of cyan, magenta yellow and black. So cool - now I can mix up most standard colours within reason to print with on the letterpress. I don't think I have many excuses left for not finishing my greeting cards project; it's time for some hard graft.

Anyway, here is a picture based around the colours. It's a little meaningless and perhaps not as friendly as I was imagining, but it's an interesting experiment nonetheless

6148155502Frankenmac110527 - FrankenmacMy grandpa's iMac G5 went south last night so I went over to give it a seeing to today. After declaring it dead and his even more aged iBook G3 to be not much good for getting on the internets even with one of those ghastly aqua stingray alcatel modems, I managed to hook him up a short-term frankenmac solution by precariously combining the largely misbehaving iMac with my barely-alive PowerBook G4. It has him back on track and less panicky but he has acknowledged he will need to upgrade and chuck his old modem out in the process.

I painted this fella on Thursday, but he was too big to go anywhere in the house. So I've decided to dabble in non-permanent unrequited public art installations by sticking it [badly] to a wall down the street with blu-tac.

I put it up on Friday night. Let's see if he survives the night.

6148153890Powerful Buttons110518 - Powerful Buttonspowerfulbuttons.tumblr.com/

I've started this silly little Tumblr blog dedicated to powerful buttons - buttons on electrical devices that suggest they make your device do a better job of what it usually does with little explanation.

It's proving a slow start though, particularly as so much of the electrical shit around my house is made by Apple, who seem to have a bit of a hatred for superfluous buttons.

I've got some more in mind, I just need to find them to photo them. Buttons like 'Mega Bass', 'Sports Mode', or 'Overdrive'. You can contribute your own finds by emailing your own pics in at the address on the site!

6147601271Parking Wardens110512 - Parking WardensThere are things I don't understand about parking wardens. The wardens around here wear these big coats embellished with fluorescent-dayglo-reflective hoops around the elbows. I can't get my head around it at all- it's only the elbows on their entire outfits that are hi-vis, so it makes me wonder if they're like safety elbows or something.

'Watch out for our elbows bruv, they're hi-vis'

They also use really loud and crackly walky talkies, which they choose to use when standing outside my window. I don't mind, but every time I hear them crackling away I wonder if it's the police doing something exciting. Alas no, it's just a parking warden playing bejeweled on their iPhone, and the reality is the rozzers are a lot more tactful with their radios if they are shaking someone down.

I don't get why parking wardens have walkie talkies though? There was a warden outside this morning shouting into her talky stick 'DO YOU NEED BACKUP!?' repeatedly, apparently at one of her colleagues, which left me wondering what backup a parking warden could possibly need? Maybe they had a paper jam in their pocketable ticket printer, or maybe a local unsavoury is kicking off cos they got caught parking their escort in the loading bay?

6148150816Not So Mini110509 - Not So MiniI found another portable Minidisc machine today, this time at the Hospital office. I think it belongs to Zac, but it was just downstairs hanging out by itself so I decided to take a photo of it. It's pretty massive considering the size of a minidisc on its own - the actual thing is bigger than a cassette, let alone the bonus battery plug on the side too!

6148149960He Is Bop110505 - He Is BopI revamped Bop's website to match his new album yesterday, which went live last night and was announced this morning.

For his second album, we had some illustrations by a Russian acquaintance of Bop, named Igor. He did a banging job, so it's been left to me to do the text and layout stuff to tie it up into a rather nice album. The website is the first part of it to really make it out into the wild!

6147597767Weddings not Warfare110502 - Weddings not WarfareI'm an indifferentist to the monarchy so while I wasn't glued to the TV watching the whole affair on Friday like my dear other half was, I appreciated it for its good-news value- the world was generally a positive place when it was the biggest talk of the town.

I spent the long weekend away in the Black Mountains without television, internet or mobile telephony, so it was a bit of a sad contrast to return to find a reportable portion of the civilised world whooping and cheering over the death of a terrorist.

He wasn't cool but the international back-patting doesn't really make us better people- I wish our nations would be showing a bit more humility about the situation.

Why can't we be friends, why can't we be frieeends

I'm not really bothered by their presence as they can be nice fluffy creatures, but I have to wonder if there's any interesting/historical reason for their association with the festivity.

The same goes for eggs for that matter - what do they have to do with this nonsense?

6143974892A completely unsolicited minimalist MacRumors makeover110423 - A completely unsolicited minimalist MacRumors makeoverAs the tech press is my soap opera, MacRumors is one of my guilty pleasures, but I always find myself thinking about how its design is so dated and, well, undesigned whenever I look at the site.

Here is a couple-hour-sketch for a grid-based redesign of the site, using only two colours. It's better than the existing, but clearly needs more development as it's only essentially a daily doodle. Not really happy with it but there's really no point sinking more time into it - I think doing this much will satisfy my itch whenever I look at the site for the time being.

The thing is there is so much cruft on the page I hope they have been working on a redesign for years, going properly into depth about what they can and can't get rid of, what can be presented better and so on, and that's why the design of the current site is so dated.

They also need to not be afraid of a fixed-width design as if you get the width of a column right, it can really aid legibility too.

This image was wiped out in the Great SCED Washout of 2011. My apologies if your favourite or comment went with it - I did all I could before I had to restore it manually. Thanks for understanding!

In hindsight this design was awful, but it was a day's thinking. Not long after I published this, MacRumours finally released an updated design. It's much better than it used to be and than I was thinking here, so well done them :)

6143970114A Webpage for some Austrians110420 - A Webpage for some AustriansI switched this webpage on yesterday. That means it's out there in the public, but nobody really seems to have noticed it yet. I guess there's not much to notice, but hopefully the page will start gathering a bit of interest in the project!

For a holding page, I'm pretty pleased with it! Again I'm experimenting with new web technologies in my minisite designs and here I have used a bit of CSS3 animation to make what is otherwise a static page look a little more interesting, providing you're looking at it in a browser that can do CSS3 animations, AKA Safari or Chrome. It does degrade nicely everywhere else, but this way the movement even works on iOS. Schön!

Along with my AV ballot, though, I got this other particularly useful ballot paper- amazing. I decided if I am to spoil anything it should be this one, so this I did.

Took me bloody ages to colour in that mouth with a 0.7mm fineliner. There are clearly more practical pieces of stationery for the job, but I was enjoying putting ink to paper with this pen

The lineups are ridiculously massive and 100% of all the profits (including Bar takings, DJ fees, Club fee etc etc) are being spread across four great causes to help our disaster-struck friends feel a bit better. If you're in London you should get down there* for it as it's for an awesome cause!

As well as this flyer, I made a little webpage for it too at www.fabriclondon.com/dontforget! It's not a perfect bit of design but it's not bad considering how quickly it came together! 6143966954Ricky Trickartt's two-storey facial hair growth pattern110405 - Ricky Trickartt's two-storey facial hair growth patternDue to the nature of being an adult male human being, I regularly find a substantial quantitiy of hairs growing out of my face. I made some oversight somewhere over the past few days which led to this beardage getting a bit out of hand, culminating in that horrible itchy stage where shaving it off is one of the greatest reliefs in the world.

All humans are different and their hair grows in different rhythms, and today I noticed mine grows in two stripes, with a funny balder patch in the middle, like a two storey beard. That is what this picture is about.

Anyway, Lilly has been away this weekend, so that gave me the opportunity to do some baking without treading on her toes. I made Oatmeal Raisin cookies (it was from one of Lilly's recipes), and they're awesome!

6143965846Special Shut Down110402 - Special Shut DownI have been pondering some kind of daily creativity involving the Special menu and shutdown option of the classic Mac OS for a while now. I think I want to recreate the menu out of lego, but it might be expensive.

Anyway, here's a fun idea for a greetings card. Perhaps a good way to dump your greybeard other half, or decline invitations to LAN parties?

6140286881Fanglepoise110330 - FanglepoiseMy poor old Great Aunt has been losing it over the past few years, to the point that she has recently been moved into a care home. My Grandpa sent me an inventory of stuff from her home that needed to be jettisoned, amongst which was an Anglepoise lamp.

I put my name down for it, on the off-chance that it was a proper old one, and my Grandpa dropped it off to me this afternoon. Sadly, upon seeing it I discovered that rather than it being an original, it's actually from BHS in the late eighties.

Nevermind! I still can't work out how these lamps work, so I'll have fun scooting it around for a few days at least!

6140840330The Social Network110327 - The Social NetworkWe watched 'The Social Network' tonight. You don't need me to tell you that despite the subject it was quite a good movie, but ultimately it was just a movie about assholes, so this picture is my three-word review of it.

I am no more inspired to open a facebook account from watching it, but I'm reasonably sure this multi-million dollar blockbuster movie wasn't made with the goal of convincing a questionably-hairstyled gentleman from the edge of London to sign up to the website.

6140840222New Swirls110326 - New SwirlsThis painting had been above our sofa since I painted it a year and a half ago. Every day I stared at it, pondering what it was I didn't like about it.

It hit me a couple of weeks ago that if I hadn't enjoyed painting it myself, then there's no way I would have it on the wall, because really it was a bit naff. The colours were all a bit mismatched and unevenly painted, and that's ignoring the fact that it's a totally boring and meaningless image that only exists because I get pleasure from putting paint onto a canvas.

I decided in the week to take it down and sand it back so I could start again on it, reducing the colours to a more restricted palette and generally doing a better job of painting it, so I would perhaps be happier to look at it every day. Halfway through sanding it back, though, I came up with the idea for Big Sergei and Castanet, and instead of repainting this, I ventured out for some timber and made those instead.

Lilly got home that evening to find the original stripey painting all sanded back and was sad about it as she liked the cheery colours. She described it as destroyed.

I decided there was no point leaving a project unfinished so I spent the weekend repainting it as you see here. It's still a completely pointless painting but I am happier with it now than I was before. It won't go back up behind the sofa for the time being though, as I still prefer Big Sergei and Castanet!

6140813340Jackasses110321 - JackassesI'm troubled by the situation unfolding in Libya. Although I obviously don't consider myself to know anywhere near enough about the situation to be entitled to an opinion, I am quite sure I don't like war. Particularly in the wake of the natural disaster in Japan it seems sociopathic for the world to see the need to create a man-made disaster too.

I guess I just feel a bit like everybody involved is a jackass; if they weren't, then we wouldn't be seeing this confrontation.

Two wrongs don't make a right and all that jazz

6140812136Dog-Cycle110319 - Dog-CyclePresenting -!- from the department of My Brain which produces ideas-which-would-have-no-practical-application-if-they-ever-came-to-exist, the patented* Dog-Cycle!

Out in the Aquadrome today, I was watching all the dogs and cyclists getting in each others' way, and got thinking about some kind of cycle a dog could operate. I thought about how if you lift a dog off the ground by its middle, it will instinctively make running motions to try and bring itself closer to the ground, so why not exploit the theory for the Dog-Cycle by suspending the dog in a torso-trough, with big pedals under its feet.

You'd have to have a dog with long legs to work it though, and if it had long legs, it'd probably be a faster runner than it could ever cycle. Because of this fact, I can recognise this machine would never have any reason to exist, so I shall therefore spare the canine race this torture.

6140254357City Cyclists110308 - City CyclistsA bit of an abstract concept from me tonight - not an amazing piece of artwork but an idea that might have more of a future with some more thought in the execution:

On my drive home across the city tonight, I noticed a lot more cyclists out than usual. I guess it's because the weather is changing; I feel like last week everyone suddenly realised the sun doesn't go down at 4pm any more.

Cycling is awesome and healthy and all, but there were so many of them darting around in their fluorescent garmentry that I felt a little bit uneasy with them around. A swarm of cyclists! It's a good thing they were all wearing their reflecty things as I probably wouldn't have noticed them nearly as much as I did tonight if they weren't.

With them all glowing away and darting around it made them feel like fireflies or something, which is what this picture is about.

6136573550Disambiguation110302 - DisambiguationI made this disambiguation page last week and was really pleased with how it looked and functioned, despite being such a simple page. I think it's surprisingly unusual to have a website that is split equally right down the middle!

I was going to post it as a creativity when I made it, but decided the Robocall I also drew that day was much better.

I've been filled in on the plan now though, and this page will likely be replaced in the next few days, so as I am pleased with it and that it will be otherwise shortlived (and that the past couple of days have been absolutely mental for me), it shall exist for longer as a daily creativity!

Once or twice a week I get these robocalls (which must be illegal?) trying to get me to change my phone supplier. It's pretty annoying, but the more annoying thing about the calls is that because I'm hellbent on using a clacky rotary dial phone, whenever it rings, it seems to cut my internet connection.

6136025631Half-Term Chi110224 - Half-Term ChiAre there any demographics who aren't bothered by half-term?

Lilly gets aggravated because kids loiter in the tube stations messing with her commuter flow, Tom is marginalised at the pool, and my retired grandparents are spending the week chasing my young cousin Pedro around the garden.

I thought I would be unaffected by the occasion in my little village-life bubble, but even I am affected - the beautiful, glowing sunshine came out today, so unlike in yesterday's misty rain, the Aquadrome was rammed full of small kids on their tiny scooters and mothers with pushchairs who like to stop suddenly when their kids fall off of their tiny scooters. I know getting kids outside is awesome, but perhaps the parents could be a little more considerate about other people in the park too, instead of travelling in packs and blocking pathways? :(

This picture is weird. It looked too nice as fineliner and watercolour, but the inks and mud I added have made it look a bit child-abuse for my comfort, particularly when considering the motivations behind it. It's interesting, nonetheless

While I'm going back in on this, it's probably worth explaining what on earth this image is about, as it seemed to only cause confusion when I originally published it:

At the time of posting, the government had just announced that product placement was now being allowed on British TV. Around the same time, I had noticed that the end credits of an American TV show (in which product placement has been allowed for many years), they had the placed products credited as 'Promotional considerations furnished by...'.

When the British government's announcement was covered in the press, it was accompanied by a list of types of product which are not allowed to be placed in TV shows for promotional purposes. The list amused me, so I drew all of the objects onto some post-it notes (punning on the last one, as you do). It ended up as a disappointing image though, and generally just baffled anyone who looked at it.

Nevermind.

6136023773New Blood, Blud110214 - New Blood, BludHere is another minisite I designed, which officially went live today. After the success of the Nu:Tone minisite, it's another on the same principal- just a page with YouTube audio of the album, presented nicely, which seems to be what people want from an album minisite.

I did a bit of crafty coding so it unveils tracks every week, advent calendar style, in the run-up to the album's release date. I also managed to design the site so it looks good no matter what your screen resolution, without resorting to difficult-to-read variable width columns, which is nice.

Anyway, you can take a look atwww.medschoolmusic.com

Lilly pointed out, upon hearing of my disappointment, that it is a pretty ugly building. She thinks most of the buildings I like to draw are ugly, but she's right with this one. It's not attractive, it's just novel because the building has battlements along the top like it was a castle.

6136021135Muntjac110209 - MuntjacI was taking a stroll through the Aquadrome this morning when a mystery creature came scampering at me. It looked like a cross between a deer and a copyu, neither of which I am used to seeing in the Aquadrome.

It galloped past me and into some undergrowth, shortly followed by an Alsatian, who didn't stop to tell me what it was chasing.

When I got home I worked out it was probably a Muntjac Deer. I didn't know such things existed in the aquadrome!

6136020785China Miéville's Kraken110207 - China Miéville's KrakenI finished reading this ridiculous book this weekend, after someone asked me if I had read it in response to the squid I made from cardboard [the comment was wiped out in the washout], and seeing a positive review of it written by an acquaintance.

I didn't hate it - it did what a good novel usually does, making me want to read just another chapter even if it's the middle of the night etc, but what started as an interesting story just got more and more daft. I was quite into the whole squid disappears and there's a cult that worships it kind of thing, but it all got a bit witches and wizards and magical, which is not my scene. Kinda reaffirmed why I've never bothered with the Harry Potter series.

It also felt a lot like the author was just making it up as he went along- not like he had a story to tell but he had a starting point for a story, which he kept shoehorning more nonsense into.

Anyway, I wouldn't reccommend the book, but here is a new cover idea for it. To be honest the cover it came with was perfectly suited to the book, but I like drawing squid and the superfluous ligatures used on the author's name on the original cover really got to me, so I figured I'd come up with an idea of my own.

6133074795TV Repairs110130 - TV RepairsThe TV signal is really bad here, so that fact combined with our lack of will to pay Rupert for satellite and an ever-pressing need to back up Lilly's beloved-but-increasingly-scratched-up M*A*S*H DVDs led us to a tiny Mac Mini to hook up to our TV.

As we don't really watch much TV anyway, we get everything we need through the internet. I made this for the browser's home page on the mini, linking to the channels and on-demand services we have been getting use out of. When you mouse over them they light up!

I jettisoned all of the shit channels and put the semi-useful ones on the bottom shelf, but the channels we actually watch sometimes got the big screens :)

They have been knocking around so I've been staring at the packaging, considering how it's perfectly functional, but actually really ugly.

I'm still thinking about it as I reckon with enough time I can come up with something decent, but for now here is a faux-retro look, complete with typography wildly out of canon for the aesthetic.

It's all fair and well, but it's not actually any better than the real packaging. I'll keep working on it.

There's something vaguely menacing about unbranded white vans. It makes you wonder what sort of business they're in, and why they wouldn't want to take advantage of the massive canvas that is their vans to say what they're up to. Maybe they're all up to bad business though, and that's why they want to stay under the radar?

Even more classic, though, are white vans which have those silly little magnetic-panel-signs on them. They always make me think it's the police on an 'undercover' stake-out.

Anyway, I was out on my walkies today when three white vans in very close succession sped past. They kinda looked like a gang. A big white gang. And it almost felt like a misinterpretation of the John Shuttleworth classic 'Three Men in a Van'.

The vans you know are bad news, though, are those old ex-BT ones in that classic grey, all matted apart from the glossy outline of the BT piper of yore

6133071911A picture to describe my drive across the metropolis this morning110117 - A picture to describe my drive across the metropolis this morningI woke up to find the weather report was wrong and the rainstorm did not pass overnight, instead hanging around well into the morning, leaving me to drive from tiny Rickmansworth to Forest Hill in the heavy rain.

My waterproof trousers proved to be not so waterproof, particularly in the crotch, which left me feeling a bit like my journey to work was via a rubber ring in a water park rather than by Vespa.

It's a shame really because it would've been a nice drive otherwise- the steed is very happy with its new tyres now!

6133071711Coolpix Camera Case110116 - Coolpix Camera CaseToday I made a case for the camera I got Lilly for Christmas! Well, I started it yesterday then quickly discovered I ran out of black thread, so I had to finish it today inatead. Anyway.

The quality of construction is terrible- I made the lens part way too big, which made the shutter button end up way off centre and the case a bit too deep for the camera, and the proportions all slightly wrong. Regardless of this, I am pleased with how it turned out- as an idea it's pretty cool, and with all the details painted in, it is a much more successful daily act of creativity :)

6133616468Regal Ring Cake110115 - Regal Ring CakeOn Saturday I went to extreme lengths to make a ring-shaped cake, just to see if I could. It was perfectly successful, but was a bit pointless as when it was done it just looked a bit like I had just cut a circle out of a normal cake.

Not a very exciting creative activity, but what can you do!

6133071209Ciao!s110113 - Ciao!sWe had never really considered the cereal name 'Cheerios' until a couple of days ago, when it dawned on Lilly and I that it was like having a cereal called 'Greetings', or indeed, 'Ciaos'. So here is a box of Ciao!s (the exclamation mark is necessary to stop it looking like chaos or being the grammatical faux-pas of a misplaced apostrophe), a cereal for Italians or yuppies.

6133069605Rubber Ring110110 - Rubber RingUrgh... So I took my Vespa to the garage (which is about 10 miles away) today to get the puncture casued by this rivet repaired. They got it up on the ramp then told me the tyre was too damaged to repair and I needed new tyres, then quickly realised they sold their last one to a French girl who turned up on a recovery truck last night. Nice story, but no good to me- I had to wangle a lift home while they wait for a new one to arrive tomorrow.

This Vespa is beginning to cause me more dependence on those with cars than the independence it used to bring me :(

If you are in the area and want an awesome burrito though, you ought to go to Freebirds. 6133068245$5 Well Spent110101 - $5 Well SpentLilly and I did the same thing as last year and hunted out a fireworks stand yesterday, buying a bag of little fireworks to bring the new year in with. We bought a 'Blazing Sunset', as made in Guangxi China (which was surprisingly prominently placed on the packaging), for $5. It was actually pretty awesome for the money, which might not have been much compared to what else was on the stand, but was the biggest one we bought, and suited us nicely without being too offensive to the neighbourhood :)

6129543471Brr!101228 - Brr!Lilly was complaining a few days before Christmas that she couldn't find a copy of this book at home (in England), which was strangely true as at one point Amazon didn't seem to have it, and neither did the libraries she frequents.

I grabbed her a copy off Amazon US for a last minute bonus gift. But as it came from Amazon, I wasn't sure what cover I was gonna get, so started dreaming up making a new one. The book didn't arrive until Christmas Eve so I didn't really have time to do it before the day, so I did it after the fact, and here it is :)

6130093144A Review of the T-Mobile Nokia 2720101226 - A Review of the T-Mobile Nokia 2720I read a lot of the tech press, and particularly since the iPhone launched, I have seen plenty about the decline of Nokia. The press I read is usually Apple-slanted, so I tend to take it with a grain of salt as continue to I use my four-year-old N73 - which is a bit slow but otherwise perfectly functional.

This christmas, Lilly and I got her Dad a little Nokia 2720 to replace his old Nokia flip phone, which was beginning to misbehave. On paper, it looked perfect- really nice and simple Nokia flip phone, and in person it would've been. Except it has been cripped by T-Mobile.

They have locked out all of the shortcut buttons via firmware on the phone, so it is impossible to remove a link to their web service from the home screen. Who would want to browse the internet on a phone this basic is beyond me, so making the shortcut irremovable is a bit stoopid. All we wanted to do was put a shortcut to the alarm clock on the home screen, but because of the operator's intervention, it takes about 10 keypresses to just get into the alarm clock application. And address book syncing is locked out only to Nokia's PC suite :\

I forget how much power the traditional phone manufacturers concede to the networks :( Nokia, what happened to you?

6130093046Festive Greetings!101225 - Festive Greetings!I find the culture of non-specific wintertime greetings here really strange. All the 'Happy Holidays' and 'Season's Greetings' but no 'Merry Christmas!' etc.

I guess it's how our two nations have diverged - in America they have pursued separation of church and state so far that the winter holidays aren't Christmas for all and therefore isn't used in the public, whereas home in England, they've just de-religion-ised Christmas to be something that can be enjoyed by anyone who wants to.

Or maybe I'm just ignorant about these things, but not being a man of faith, I still take part in the seasonal fun!

Anyway, Happy Christmas everyone, regardless of your religious preferences!!

6130092514Catpost101220 - CatpostContinuing on the mailbox theme, Lilly and I had a pair of converging thoughts, which I ended up putting down in post-it form:

1) I pondered how the existence of the American-style mailbox could open up a world of opportunities for pranks of which the mailman or the homeowner is the victim- by hiding things in the mailbox. I was imagining putting like a plush fox inside the mailbox, with the mouth open and holding letters.

2) The neighbours have a cat named 'Sweet Boy', which is a surprisingly appropriate name, as he is a rather soppy tomcat. He is black and white so he looks a bit like he's wearing a tux, and he's constantly outside flopping around and following me across the street and stuff. So Lilly suggested as the cat doesn't seem to serve much of a function aside from flopping around in our driveway, we could put him in the mail, which tickled me, particularly as her parents' mailbox has doors on both sides of the box, making a good pipe to send the cat through.

I have not done this to the cat though, as I am aware that he probably has claws. Being a cat and all.

6130090624No Disrespect to Boris Award101206 - No Disrespect to Boris AwardIt sucks when two of your works are pitted against each other in a competition as there can only ever be one winner.

Some people in the Hospital office were sad when Danny Byrd didn't win the award for best album at the Banana awards on Thursday, so I made them this low-rent acetate-and-sellotape bonus award.

Everyone's a winner when you work with Ricky Trickartt!!

6129539703Reindeer Advent Calendar101201 - Reindeer Advent CalendarI bought Lilly an advent calendar last year but it never got completed as we left for Texas long before it was up.

I decided to make her one this year that, besides being an excuse for doing something creative, only goes up to when we leave. Each day has chocolates in it, and a crude drawing of some item of christmas ephemera in the back :)

The deer is pretty cool, but I think the post-it drawing I based it on was better!

6127786794Christmas Card Linocut101128 - Christmas Card LinocutI did this linocut today for our christmas cards this year, in a kitsch 50s style. It's a little wobbly, which I guess is a bit unavoidable with the medium, but it's fun.

This was just a very quick printing to make sure it looked right. I'm sure (hoping) it will look much better when done in the letterpress! I am planning on printing it in white on a midnight blue card stock, which you can be sure I will post a photo of when that happens!

Anyway! I know food photos (particularly of Thanksgiving dinners) aren't visually very exciting, but we didn't do much else (beside cooking and eating) on Saturday, so that's the best I can offer!

6127770630The Moustache Collection101120 - The Moustache CollectionIt was my niece's sixth birthday on Wednesday. I recently learned she has a strange liking of moustaches (as six year old girls do?!), often drawing them on herself and suchlike.

So following on from last week's post-it note, I painted her this t-shirt; of a creature with a nice big tache. The creature isn't supposed to be anything specific, but he kinda looks like a polecat to me.

I make some stupid stuff sometimes. I revolutionised my storage system in the wardrobe, and found some pink fur, so I decided to make a female counterpart to Erno with it. She's a like a vaguely anthropomorphic marshmallow :S

She also had terrifyingly broad shoulders when I got her stitched up late last night, so I had to rectify that this morning, hence the delay in posting her. They're still quite broad now but she's cute enough I guess

6123519537Time Traveller101026 - Time TravellerThe paradox of time travel is great! Sometimes I like to think that time machines have been successfully created dozens of times already, but for every machine that was created, they used it to go back in time and prevent its creation to stop the time travel paradox. I mean- we wouldn't know any difference in our day-to-day existences, only if we were the ones doing the time travelling. Amazing

Anyway, this drawing was inspired by Lilly, who called to wish a friend a happy birthday two months early a few weeks ago. It's not really intended to be a commentary on Royal Mail (as I'm not sure what it would be trying to be saying?), but you can read it that way if you like

6124036902Hippo Birthday!101019 - Hippo Birthday!Yesterday was Lilly's birthday! We went to the zoo in Berlin where we saw some amazing hippopotamuses, who were being fed bread, in a typical German fashion. They were so cool!

As our flight was delayed and we were in Berlin, I didn't get to make her a card until today, but at least it reflected her birthday!

6124033464Schönefeld101018 - SchönefeldI drew this on a plane!

This evening, we spent a lot of time in Schönefeld Airport in Berlin, which I have decided is my second-least-favourite airport (second only to Dalaman so far).

For the non-Germans here, Schönefeld = Beautiful Field

...And thus completes my Berlin Trilogy *Bowie*

6123485601Under She Goes101014 - Under She GoesThe composition of this post-it note is terrible but it's quite a nice clanky little submarine!

I listened to Benji B's show today, following the little video I did to introduce his show, and spent half of the afternoon trying to remember where I know the submarine sample dotted through the show from. I didn't work it out, but it's why I drew this!

6123481377From The Drop101013 - From The DropThis featured in yesterday's blog post, so I thought I'd put it up here today and write a little bit about it.

I've done a few bits for MJ Cole's prolific, and this is the latest. I'm quite pleased with it in its orangey goodness. It's a digital packshot and vinyl centre labels.

Annoying coincidence- the typeface is the same one I used for Mistabishi's album 'Drop'. This wasn't deliberate- it's the same typeface Prolific have been using since long before I've been looking after their art, and I tried to avoid it in using a different weight, but the clients specified this one! haha

Never really listened to Wiley before, but this record has a line in it that made me chuckle: "Wanna box? I've got about eight in my loft"

I believe it's out on November 1st, for those that want it!

This, my daily creativity followers, is what I was working my behind off for on Thursday and Friday instead of posting nonsense up here. It's a little animation for BBC Radio 1, about Benji B and his new show there :)

You can watch it and read what I have to say about it here (it's too long for Flickr video):

6123676874Podgoose100921 - PodgooseI needed to burn some DVDs while at the Hospital office yesterday, which the HairBook wasn't very helpful about (lacking an optical drive and all), so I had to pop downstairs to use the studio's Big Mac. While I was waiting for them to burn, I grabbed a few photos of the studio, as they're usually useful for graphics for things like the Podcast. And they are already proving to be, as here is a picture of the Goose recording this week's Hospital Podcast!

6123663510, 24, France100916 - , 24, FranceI spent all day today flapping around with lacklustre ideas for daily creativity, and just as I was resigning myself to skipping this day and was washing up after dinner (which was tasty, but unfortunately lamb tagine isn't exactly photogenic enough to work as a daily act of creativity), I noticed this masterpice inside the Le Creuset I cooked it in.

It kinda reminds me of a colourblindness test, come to think of it

6123094967Vespa Linocut100912 - Vespa LinocutA bit late to try and print this this evening, but hopefully it'll print nicely :)

I may as well use this opportunity to point out that it took me ages to do it, but I finally printed this linocut onto greetings cards, which you can buy here: buy.trickartt.com/product/pistachio-vespa-card!

This image was wiped out in the Great SCED Washout of 2011. My apologies if your favourite or comment went with it - I did all I could before I had to restore it manually. Thanks for understanding!
